Participants will discuss the importance of spiritually sensitive social work and mental health practice. Dr. Nicotera will present insights, experiences, and scholarship from the spirituality, social justice, and multi-faith leadership courses he teaches; his extensive domestic and international faith and community-based work; and the post master’s Spirituality and Social Work Certificate Program he directs at NYU. Dr. Nicotera will invite discussion about social work’s commitment to the bio-psycho-social-spiritual person-in-environment perspective, and present his Circle of Insight as a practical tool that social workers can use to deepen their commitment to spiritually sensitive practice. Dr. Nicotera will also share a clip from The 5 Powers, an award-winning film he helped produce in collaboration with Thich Nhat Hanh, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Finally, Dr. Nicotera will offer additional resources and tools that participants can use in their spiritually sensitive practice.
