Stigma surrounding mental illness in diverse communities often leads to feelings of shame and isolation, which can deter individuals from seeking necessary help and support. By incorporating cultural narratives in clinical settings, providers can create a more trusting and sacred environment, ultimately fostering better engagement and healing for clients of diverse communities. This workshop aims to equip clinical providers with an understanding of the cultural significance of storytelling in diverse communities. Participants will learn how to incorporate narratives into their practice, fostering a deeper connection with clients, decreasing exposure to therapeutic trauma, and enhancing therapeutic outcomes.

To earn CE credit, social workers must log in at the scheduled time, attend the entire course, and complete an online course evaluation. Certificates of completion will be emailed within 10 business days of course completion.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize the Role of Storytelling by identifying at least two ways cultural storytelling contributes to client healing and therapeutic rapport within a clinical case example
  • Integrate Cultural Context by demonstrating the ability to incorporate at least one culturally relevant storytelling techniques into clinical practice to strengthen the therapeutic relationship
  • Identify Barriers and Solutions by highlighting at least two potential barriers to effective communication with clients from diverse backgrounds and explore strategies to overcome them
  • Apply Reflective Practices and utilize one learned writing prompts while reviewing case studies to reflect on the role of personal and cultural stories in clinical settings
