Nonprofit organizations differ from their for profit counterparts in one key way: dedication to the charitable mission. Strategic management starts with setting the organization's mission, vision, and values, and ends with a strategic agenda: an organic, vital, and living document that proactively guides leaders to a common preferred future. The process works to align governance, management, and staff in a single direction and with common purpose. Metrics ("what gets measured gets done") are discussed that support the accountability of the management to clients and to the governing body, and which keeps the process fresh and self-sustaining. The model is outcome driven, built on business principles, and reflects the belief that: "Nonprofit" is a tax category, not a state of mind.
