In this webinar, we will examine the subculture of “geek” or “nerd” culture, along with its broader implications for identity as part of “Fandoms”. We will break down what “Fandoms” are and what they can look like to develop an understanding of the communities associated with them and the role “Fandoms” have in identity formation. We will look at how various forms of media an individual interacts with and connects to, such as Television, Anime, Movies, Video games, etc., shape world views and self-concept. We will examine various forms of media as vehicles for identity exploration for individuals and how to connect this to the therapeutic process. We will also examine the role representation, or the lack thereof, plays in an individual’s development of identity and self-concept. We will touch on language as part of our exploration and on how it can positively or negatively impact the therapeutic process for individuals and their identity. Finally, we will explore concrete ways to incorporate “Fandoms” into existing therapeutic approaches through various interventions.
